SOUTHBRIDGE — He's not exactly Mozart. For one thing, he didn't start playing the piano until he was all of 8, and, for another, he didn't begin composing his own music until he was an old man of 13. But Michael Caprera is still something of a prodigy. He's the only local teen keyboardist with regular appearances at Jacob Edwards Library — and other area venues.

And his gig at the library last week featured only his original works, including at least one piece composed completely – improvised, that is – on the spot.

At the ripe old age of 18, Caprera is a composer who is both learning – and teaching – his art. Sharing insights into the creative process – which for him includes inspiration via piano practice pieces, music camp assignments, and even dreams, Caprera wowed an audience of about 30 last Thursday with his enthusiasm, energy, and exceptional poise and polish.
